What you need to know

Our organic kibbled flaxseed is oilseed flaxseed from organic farming, cracked just enough. It is the most practical form of flax: unlike the oil, which provides only the fat fraction, kibbled seeds bring together in a single matrix omega-3 ALA, fibre and plant protein, with a real crunch. Grown and cracked in Béarn, they can be sprinkled on anything, from breakfast to dinner. To go further, read our complete guide to flaxseed.

Our kibbled flaxseed is 100% vegan, certified organic and naturally gluten-free.

Organic kibbled flaxseed, from organic farming in Béarn

Our kibbled seeds are certified organic: the flax they are made from is grown according to organic farming specifications, without synthetic fertilisers or pesticides. This recent certification confirms a standard we have upheld from the very beginning, that of a raw material grown on a specific terroir and harvested when ripe.

The seeds are sorted then cracked a few kilometres from the plots, in the same workshop that cold-presses our oil. Traceability is complete, from the Béarn plot to the bag, and each batch is identified. To discover the flax grown in the Pyrenees, read our feature on flax.

Cracking: the key to texture

This is the great strength of kibbled seeds. The coat of the flaxseed is smooth and very tough: whole, it passes through a preparation without giving up any of its fragrance. Cracking splits it open and releases the toasted hazelnut aroma of the kernel, without reducing the seed to powder.

This intermediate setting, between the whole seed and the flour, is what makes the product so worthwhile:

  • more fragrant than a whole seed, which stays sealed;
  • more crunchy than a flour, which melts into the preparation;
  • more stable than a fine grind, less exposed to air and light;
  • ready to use: no grinder, no preparation, just open and sprinkle.

A complete composition: omega-3 ALA, fibre and protein

Because they keep the whole seed, kibbled seeds also keep its entire composition. Kibbled flaxseed brings together:

  • omega-3 ALA: kibbled seeds are rich in alpha-linolenic acid, the plant-based omega-3, held in the fat fraction of the seed;
  • fibre: mucilage and insoluble fibre, absent from the oil, which swell on contact with water and give flax its gelling power;
  • plant protein and minerals, the dry fraction of the seed.

It is this combination that sets kibbled seeds apart from linseed oil, which provides only the fat, and from whole flaxseed, which you have to grind yourself. For a fine powder intended for baking, turn to our flax flour.

How to use kibbled flaxseed in cooking

Their great strength is simplicity: kibbled seeds are sprinkled cold or added to preparations, without the oil’s strict no-cooking rule. A few ideas:

  • on a yoghurt, fromage blanc or muesli at breakfast;
  • in a smoothie, a compote or a fruit bowl;
  • as a topping on a salad, a soup or roast vegetables;
  • added to a bread, cake or cookie dough for crunch;
  • mixed into a vinaigrette, a hummus or a coating;
  • mixed in equal parts with water and left to stand for 10 minutes, to thicken a sauce or a plant-based mixture.

Allow one to two tablespoons to flavour a preparation. For an extra omega-3 touch served cold, pair them with our organic linseed oil. Find signature ideas from our ambassador chefs on the recipes page.

Taste and texture

Our kibbled seeds have a toasted hazelnut flavour, more expressive than that of the whole seed, and a crunchy texture that holds up well, including in the oven. Their amber colour and irregular size are the hallmark of mechanical cracking, without fine grinding. Fresh kibbled seeds have a mild smell; a marked bitterness signals that they have aged.

Storage: keeping kibbled seeds fresh and crunchy

Once the seed is cracked, its fat fraction becomes more sensitive to air and light. To preserve all their quality:

  • keep the bag tightly closed, away from light and moisture;
  • after opening, preferably keep them in the fridge, in an airtight jar;
  • use the kibbled seeds within a reasonable time after opening to enjoy their freshness.

The 250 g format is calibrated for regular use without waste.

Frequently asked questions

Is your kibbled flaxseed organic?

Yes. Our kibbled flaxseed comes from organic farming and is certified organic: the flax is grown without synthetic fertilisers or pesticides, then cracked in Béarn.

What is the difference between kibbled flaxseed and linseed oil?

The oil provides only the fat fraction of the seed, rich in omega-3 ALA. Kibbled seeds also provide fibre, protein and minerals, as well as crunch. The oil is used in dressings, the kibbled seeds as a topping or in doughs.

Why crack flaxseed?

The coat of the whole seed is very tough and keeps its fragrance locked in. Cracking splits it open and releases the hazelnut aroma, while keeping the crunch and holding up better over time than a fine powder.

How should kibbled flaxseed be stored after opening?

Bag tightly closed or an airtight jar, away from light and moisture, preferably in the fridge. The 250 g format is designed for regular use.

Does kibbled flaxseed contain gluten?

No. Flax is an oilseed, not a cereal: our kibbled seeds are naturally gluten-free and 100% vegan.
